The Music of Dan Forrest, 2020

Description:

Two modern canons in up to 5 parts, setting a beautiful text longing for singing to begin again. Flexible enough to be sung by SATB or SSAA choirs of any size. Written during the 2020 pandemic as a gift to the global choral community.

Text:

(By Clem Schoenebeck, a chorus member, after his choir had to abandon their rehearsals and performance plans for Requiem for the Living. See Clem and his choir director Maria van Kalken read and discuss the poem here.)

Where did the long pause begin,

our hopeful notes abandoned in disturbed air?

When we return, where will we start?

I cannot find the measure where we went silent. But the notes

know where they are, suspended above in a holding pattern.

Waiting for a trusted hand to wave us into the downbeat.

-Clem Schoenebeck (2020)
